My favorite comment, as I’ve written about many times, is “I don’t run because I don’t want to wreck my knees”.
So here’s the question; Is walking around with three or four bowling balls worth of extra weight not bad for your knees?
As with depression, the only way I know to be as pain free as possible is to get outside and move.
Now, if you want something “green” to move on – carbon fiber isn’t your thing, say you happen to be a tree-hugger, so you don’t like aluminum or steel… Try this:
Calfee is on the expensive side… If that’s too much, check out Boo Bicycles. I just happened to bump into Mike yesterday when I went out for my ride and he was telling me about a fella he saw at the Tuesday night ride that had one – who ever would have thunk it? Very cool – and I’m anything but a treehugger.
These bikes are mint! The craftsmanship and engineering that go into them are amazing. Due to my own knee issues- BLAH and discussing this at length with Doctors and therapist…Two of the critical factors that influence knee rehabilitation post surgery is: Age and BMI. These apply as well for consideration into whether to have surgery in the first place. Anyways…I had a bookmark about a bike company that made frames out of one piece of wood and carved the whole thing…I’ll see if I can find it?!?
That’s a good point about age and BMI – another important factor is previous leg injuries, and I keep forgetting to mention that. Those with injuries to the legs that restrict the motion of the knee can’t run without tearing up the joint.
Tapping into my inner sports therapy geek. The May issue of the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy states:
Age and BMI are taken as individual factors to consider…Concomitant injuries and procedures factor in heavily as well: Prior surgery etc.
There are literally a million factors that come into play with knee injuries: Sport, Competitive Level, Psychological factors…
Found the bike co. http://www.renovobikes.com/ I’d buy one of these now if the wife would let me 😉
See my comment above – Prior injuries are a very good reason to skip the running.
Can’t decide on the R-3 or R-4… That’s a nice looking bike right there.
No kidding! And how many times do we see someone limping around with a knee brace who swears by running?
If you are out on the bike this weekend have a great time!!!
Saturday’s going to be tame – first one off in a long time, because I’ve got my first 100k on Sunday – Sunny and 58 degrees – it’s going to be PERFECT! Enjoy your weekend as well.
The TT Bike is UNBELIEVABLE!
Honestly if you like at the prices of them…not too bad especially compared to a Kuota.
I never much cared for running when I was younger but I’ve always loved riding a bike. I install flooring for a living so some days I might spend a mile or two crawling around on my knees installing carpet. A couple years ago when I decided I needed to lose weight I went the bike route due to the lesser impact on my knees. 2 years later and 60 pounds lighter I’m still riding and loving it. I think it’s all about you enjoy to do and can do on a regular basis. If you love running on your hand and you can do it every day then more power to you. By the way.. those are some cool looking bikes. Way out of my price range though but cool all the same.
Way out of my price range too… The Boo Bicycle would be doable, if painful but that Calfee one is beautiful.
I started out running because that’s what everyone I knew did – I never really liked it, but I did it anyway. Now that I’m into riding, I feel the same way you do. On the other hand, a little running helps keep the bone mass density up where cycling robs from it… The impact is quite necessary, for the bones and cartilage.
Well I make up for it by hiking a lot. I mix it up between hiking and biking. Love them both. Do more hiking during the cooler seasons and bike more when it warms up.
I noticed that about your hiking on your blog… You’re blessed to live in such a nice place… I’ve gotta drive 2-3 hours minimum to see anything like that.
Guys, thanks for the compliments on the Boo! I’m quite proud of them. And no, they are not cheap, but they are competitive with any Madone or Tarmac, and full custom.
You bet – cool bikes man.
