I was gung-ho at the beginning of the week, about keeping with my 25 mile per day average cycling but that enthusiasm has tapered a wee bit. It’s not that I don’t want to ride that far, I’ve just been a little short on time lately. Add to that some sore hip flexors that straightened themselves out after my massage, it just made sense to take it down a notch for a few days. I’ve read a lot about overtraining and I have no idea what that feels like, but I don’t want to find out so I figured I’d take it easy (relatively speaking) for a couple of days. Thursday’s and Friday’s rides were both only 16 miler’s.
Thursday’s was a hard effort (19.9 mph avg, getting stopped at every sign and light on the way through), and Friday’s was a medium hard effort (19.2 avg, only a couple of stops).
This, of course, opened up a lot of options for today – I went long (50) I didn’t bother running as the kids will be spending the night at a friend’s house, which means date night for the wife and I… I don’t need to be wiped out for that. It’s kind of funny how that works with me – I can ride 50 miles and feel awesome an hour later, but running seven wipes me out.
Today’s weather was spectacular for a long ride. I started out at 8 am with temps in the low 70’s and by the time I finished it was in the mid 80’s (though quite windy). I could go on and on about every mile, but it’s really not necessary. I had a blast and ended up with a 19.2 mph average – with only three miles of tailwind all day on the last three (where I averaged 25 mph).
What I will say about the ride is that it was truly awesome and I was in a lot less pain and discomfort than I was when I did my 100k. Granted, it was 13 miles shorter, even taking that into account, I’m in much better shape than I was just two months ago (and my bike setup is perfect too).
I’ve said (and written) many times, the only thing I like more than a 16 mile ride is a 50 mile ride and today’s was a little more than 2-1/2 hours of pure awesome.
Oh, the tan lines are now spectacular, even Mrs. BgddyJim was impressed.
