The Coolest Thing I Did As A New Dad…

October 2012

My favorite memory from when my oldest daughter was still a baby, just a little more than a couple of handfuls, happened about two weeks after we brought her home.  She had been hooked up to a “Biliblanket” when we first brought her home to deal with her being jaundiced for some reason that nobody could figure out.  After a couple of weeks of nail-biting she’d finally progressed enough to where we could take it back…  Shortly thereafter I was laying on the bed with her sleeping on my chest.  I was just about ready to fall asleep as well so I set her on her side next to and facing me, head resting on my outstretched arm… and her tiny little breaths hitting me on the nose…  That was the first time it really set in that my wife and I had made her.  It was, without a doubt, the coolest “new dad” moment I ever had and I made sure to do the exact same thing when our second came along.

That was nine years ago and I can still remember that feeling like it was yesterday – it still makes my heart skip a beat thinking back on it…

So, new dads, after things have calmed down around the house, take a minute to let your new baby breathe on your face – to let it sink in that you just made a new life, you won’t regret it…

Of course, lest we not anger the baby docs in the house – taking a nap with a newborn is frowned upon because of the possibility of rolling over on and smothering the newborn while you’re asleep, or at least that’s what we were told…  Please be careful, and if you’re a restless sleeper, no naps with the baby.
