With the misses out of town, I was trying, Friday night, to figure out how I’d get a few miles in on Saturday without a babysitter. I had a pretty good idea, one mile sprints followed by one mile of recovery on the bike up and down our road… This way I could have my eldest watch the youngest and never be more than a few minutes from home. As reasonable as I could make that sound, I didn’t like the idea at all. Fortunately it rained all day long so I didn’t have to worry about it. I spent much of the day on the couch watching football (MSU not so good, U of M excellent) followed by an amazing Tigers win in game one against the Yankees… And it was good.
Since declaring that last Sunday’s century was the end of my season, I took it completely easy this last week with just two shorter 16 mile rides and a 5k run. Man has it been nice. Just enough to feel like I didn’t completely punt this week, but little enough that I gave the guns a good, much needed rest.
For today, we’ve got rain in the forecast all day, though the radar shows an opening in about an hour… If the road dries in time, I’m riding. If not, it’ll be a properly paced four or five mile run.
As luck would have it, the skies cleared up and the roads dried just enough, with the help of Southerly 25 mph winds, and just long enough for an excellent ride. The weather was hilarious, windy as hell, but warm – almost 70 degrees. Heading into the wind for the last four miles, I was laughing. 14-15 mph and maybe 10 during the gusts. Of course, I was going 25-29 on the way out, so there’s that…
In any event, what a great way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon. I truly feel blessed to have been able to get out for the one perfect hour of the day.
