April 11, 1913

My great-aunt Helen was born on April 11th, 1913, just over 100 years ago.

At her funeral yesterday, the Priest mentioned how amazingly healthy she was, that she was still shoveling her driveway into her 90’s – even though her kids paid for a service to do it. She complained that they didn’t show up early enough. She also swept her lawn to keep it clear of debris… With a broom.

Finally, she was known for riding her bike around her neighborhood – well into her 90’s.

Let’s just say I’m not exactly surprised.

The only problem I’ll have is figuring out whether I should flip the handlebars up on my Venge when I hit 85 or 90. Personally I find the practice abhorrent, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

She sounds like one cool lady. Clearly cycling is in your genes.

    She sounds beyond awesome 🙂
But I am really sorry for your loss. You are carrying on that cycling tradition–you just know she’s proud.
    And flip’em–you’ll be 90!

      LOL! That’s a great point!

She was absolutely a great lady, and it really isn’t so much a loss as a passing. She was tired and she went Home, in her sleep. It was peaceful and for that I’m exceptionally grateful. Thanks Sandra.

  3. Do not flip them – never give in.

LOL – no doubt about it – I wrote that bit for a laugh from you, the guy who writes Bike War, Chris Collins and Cult Fit. Every time I see a guy riding down the road with the drops flipped I want to scream at him for his egregious ignorance. It is an unforgivable sin against cycling.

    Respect on the proper century.
