I want a city like this…

January 2014

I was checking out a buddy’s blog and he posted a documentary about a cycling city in the Netherlands.  Now, if you’re viewing this in the US, please keep in mind, when the professor talks about the “Left Wing” positively and the “Right Wing” negatively, first this shouldn’t be a surprise as he’s a professor (and all too often it takes an intellectual to speak so eloquently and stupidly about the Left Wing) but secondly, they cannot be the same left wing and right wing as they are in the US.  The only thing the Left Wing is capable of doing well in the US is making shit blow up – be it the execrable Weather Underground or Unabomber, or for your standard Democrat; the economy, freedom and happiness.

In any event, there’s plenty of awesomeness in a cycling city to go around for both wings…  In fact, most of the guys I know (myself included) are neither wing, they’re much closer to the right wing (whether they know it or not, sometimes its so tough to break the media’s stereotype of the right, I know), or somewhere nearer the middle.  Either way, check this city out (and notice how healthy the populous looks):

WOOHOO! I hate and LOVE politics at the same time (you know this). On the other hand, so often the politics of the Beltway don’t resemble the politics of flyover country. My town would consider itself left leaning when it’s not even close. My town identifies as left, they’re just lower case left wing (the old left without the dopey commie streak of the new). I’d be willing to majority of Dems fall under this description, they just have a tough time separating the emotion from the Beltway Dems. I would guarantee that you and I, minus the emotion, are VERY close politically, save a few minor disagreements. I like to call this “looking at the same dollar bill, just from different sides”, metaphorically speaking.

My wife, God Bless her, talks tough Democrat politics’ wise but she raises our kids every bit the old style Democrat way (or today’s Conservative if you will). This is why JFK would never make it in today’s Democrat party – JFK and President Obama are nowhere near the same politically. JFK is closer to Reagan or (second term) Clinton while President Obama and Jimmy Carter, politics and policy are very close.

🙂 I would probably agree with you on this one. I’m liking your wife more every day (tee hee). I worry about radicals of either side, and people who are simply lemmings.

My students read Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, and others’ calls that an *EDUCATED* public is required for the success of a democratic system. They make up their own minds–the glory of college is that they’re suppose to be critical thinkers, not lemmings of another kind 🙂

Shhh, but I’m teaching a course on Revolutions in Latin America this semester and we started off by watching MISSING (Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek). The people/institutions that the US protected during this particular Argentinian coup is disheartening.

There can be no doubt that we mess up from time to time… And you and I are even closer than I’d guessed. Lemmings, I like that.

      • Sandra says:

        Yup. Indeed.

And yes, lemmings. 🙂 We have an epidemic of lemmitis at work. . . . That said, I still have *THE* best job in the whole wide world. I get to read books for a living!

Thanks for the re-post. I agree this is a city ideal that we should all strive for!
