To Shave, or not to Shave? That is a Question.

April 2014

The well-known Velominati list of “The Rules” contains an interesting one: Don’t shave (the face, ladies – this is a guy only rule) the day of a race.

Now their reasoning I tongue-in-cheek and I don’t race but I’ve applied that rule to “long rides” and found that I prefer not shaving the morning of – technically, I’ve gone both ways on this and simply put, sweating is much less irritating if I haven’t shaved.

With that said, here are a few other special rules I stick to concerning long rides (we’re – my two best riding friends and I – going 75 miles in a few hours):

1. Never one drop more than two cups of coffee before the ride – and coffee consumption must be cut off a minimum of two hours before lift-off. Nothing worse than having to pull over to pee ten miles into a 75 mile ride.

2. Mom’s Best Blue-Pom Wheat-Fulls cereal is a must. Best pre-ride fuel I’ve ever consumed.

3. Shower before the ride. Nothing worse than drafting behind someone who stinks so bad that you can smell them at 25 mph.

Where do you come down on shaving before a big day on the bike?

  1. fastk9dad says:

Since my beard grows faster than Homer Simpson’s I prefer to shave before a ride otherwise I’ll be fighting stubble itch towards the end of the day.

  2. I don’t shave any day I’m off work unless I have a funeral or something else to attend like that. I pretty much take any excuse I can to not shave, so a long bike ride counts. I just wish I could grow a real beard.

    • bgddyjim says:

LOL! Perspective brother. I wish I couldn’t (grow a real beard). I have a five o’clock shadow at noon. Sound theory you have though. I like it.

  3. Kecia says:

I know this doesn’t apply to face shaving…BUT…I shave my legs every time I get in the shower. I hate the feeling of stubbles 😉

    • bgddyjim says:

Me too, different rules altogether for the legs. My wife won’t let me get away without anyway. She likes a face stubble day now and again though.

  4. Jason says:

I always stop shaving 2 to 3 days before – otherwise, my face will get really irritated. Before I ran an ultra, I stopped shaving for a few weeks and I actually liked running with a beard!

  5. Paige says:

I’ll add in a woman’s 2 cents althought not about the face. A female ob/gyn suggested that female athletes should never, ever shave…anywhere! Stick to waxing only. Less chance of irritation and possible infection. To all the guys…share that info with your ladies. 😃

    • bgddyjim says:

One thing missing Paige… I will continue to shave. When you’re as healthy and awesome as I am, infections are to scared to start in my body! 😝

  6. saltyvelo says:

I bet you with you were asian. I go a week between shaves, no stubble itch. Since I always take Sundays off, Sunday morning is my day. I then avoid the sweat irritation as well.

  7. lee says:

Fun post. I can’t say I have ever shaved before a long ride. But then I drag the same blade across my face for weeks or even months, and lately using nothing but water, so it’s rare that my face has that freshly-shaved feel. (Long story short, someone in the house likes emptying the can. I’m lucky to get two shaves out of a can.)

  8. Night before for the face and two days before for the legs.
