There are three parts to this next statement: I hate cycling in the cold.
First, I don’t like the fact that wearing enough clothes to stay comfortable slows me down.
Second, I hate that if I rode faster, I’d be warmer but I’d end up sweating which leaks body heat. Layering properly helps but even that isn’t perfect.
Third, if there’s no snow on the ground, I hate cycling in the cold just a little bit less than I hate riding on the God forsaken trainer.
With that in mind, I went out for a little ride today, just sixteen miles but it was, well not too sucky. In fact, with the exception of the last four miles (into the wind), it was really quite not horrible. At least the sun was out every now and again. The temp was right at freezing but with the wind that “feels like” 26. Unfortunately at 18-20 mph it was chilly baby.
Of course, chilly is way better than the training wheels and it sure beats getting fat.
Try running 13.1-plus miles in cold driving rain….at night! 🙂
Yup, that sucks alright!
Yes, it did! And what do I go and do? Just registered for the A1A half Marathon in fort Lauderdale in February! 🙂
Ummmm… MOUNTAIN BIKE. The trails were pristine today with the cold taking care of any chance for mud. Wind is not a factor in the woods. Come to the off road side, Luke.
You know, I never thought of that! Good idea, thanks.
I will keep saying that until I see it here! LOL
Fair enough. 😄
Good attitude! Good for you to get out there.
Thanks Sue.
OMG! Were we separated at birth? During my last half (which I was running with sinus and ear infections) I looked over at my friend & said, “I hate this! I’m ONLY running so I don’t get fat!!!” I got the stink eye from about a dozen people. Oops!
It’s still a balmy 8 deg C here, but it won’t be long before the temps are sitting around freezing. Time to get the miles in on the heavy winter bike, or weigh your current one down with hardier tyres, lights and mudguards all slowing you down… But once you forget about average speeds and Strava PR’s then winter cycling can be really enjoyable. Enjoy the journey.
This weekend I finally succumbed. I began spinning classes. In the warmer weather I would rather be out on the road. In the cold weather, I turn to spinning.
I too am a fair weather cyclist but fortunately the temperature rarely drops below 10C. So it’s only torrential rain that puts me on the home trainer.
If I were you I would have already been lounging on my sofa with a bag of chips. but Good on you.. sad to say it’s not even winter (but it is raining) and both my bikes are just sitting there. 😦
Bummer man. Rain sucks.
