I’ve never been one to “practice” swimming. I never once did a lap in preparation for a triathlon (of course, I’ve only ever done Olympic distances, the swim is short enough to muscle it out). I just figured I’d give it my best freestyle effort for as long as I could then switch to the breast stroke to wrap it up. However, now that my eleven year-old daughter can almost kick my butt I figured it was time I put in a few laps to, um, avoid getting my butt kicked by my soon to be twelve year-old daughter.
Funny thing, swimming. I can ride a bike for five hours, twice as fast as the average bike rider would go over ten miles, no worry. Put me in a pool and 50 yards later and I’m huffin’ and puffin’ like I just quit smoking the day before. Now is a good time to explain that I am not one to lolly gag. I’ve always been one to go fast first, then worry about distance. Better to be happy and enjoy the workout, I always say.
We spent almost an hour and a half in the pool yesterday and I put in as many laps as I could fit in between catching my breath. I have no idea how many laps I did or how fast I did them but every lap was a drag race, I gave it everything I had and I’m quite a bit hurty today… So much I’m going to have to do an easy spin on the bike, even my legs are smoked. The bright side is that I at least doubled what I was able to do just last week. While I didn’t keep track, there was a lot more swimming and a lot less resting this week.
Cool swim workout for cyclists:
2 x 50 yards Breast Stroke using only your legs (arms behind your back). It sucks!
Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
