The Fit Recovery Cycling Dictionary defines the word(s) “baby ring” thusly:

Baby Ring

ˈbābē riNG

In cycling, the small front chain ring which one only uses on steep climbs, for cycling into gale force winds, or on warm-ups, so named to imply a derogatory tinge because, after all, if you use the baby ring frequently…  I’ll just let it hang there.
