I went out for a second, special, ride with my wife yesterday evening after she arrived home from a volunteer board meeting.  It was like most rides on the tandem, though a little shorter and slower that we usually manage… just 14 miles in 50 minutes and some change.

Friends, that’s my nine year-old daughter on the back of our tandem.  Before that ride yesterday, her longest ride was 14 miles, but it was an out and back with an ice cream stop at the halfway point and the average was maybe 9 mph. Yesterday’s fourteen saw my kid hammer the whole ride, almost twice as fast, on the back of the tandem (and yes, I could feel her pedaling – she was workin’).

We’ve obviously got some things to work on.  Sunglass style, sunglass arms over the helmet straps and choice of shirt (she was, however, wearing cycling shorts).  That said, it’s a pretty good start.  Chuckle.

She’s ridden for a few years now but she’s always started complaining about three to five miles in and ten was almost insufferable…. so THIS was very special indeed! Thanks.
