The 2017 Cycling Season Officially Ends in Michigan… Yesterday.

It’s all over but the shoutin’, folks.  Oh, and I should clarify, Southeastern Michigan.  Up North and the Upper Peninsula don’t even bother cancelling school for 8″ of snow.  They just pull out the snowmobiles.  They called my kids’ school off before it even started snowing and they’re off again today.

At least you HAVE snow. Our snow, well, it didn’t!

I want snow! We keep getting “dustings” (if that’s what you even call it), but no measurable snow. I want to go snowshoeing, but sadly that doesn’t look to be in my future anytime soon. Get out and enjoy it for me! 😉

    What, no pedalled snowmobile?

Nope. I like taking a few months off every year – it keeps me excited for the upcoming season.

Last year, you were a dedicated roadie. While you were never hostile to mountain biking, you are pretty clearly “meh.” Now you have a gravel bike. That domino fell pretty quickly.

The next domino to fall is the purchase of a fat bike. If this looks like an early and long winter to you (we got the storm that hit you yesterday sometime early this morning), there’s still inventory of fat bikes out there at your favorite bike shop. Fat bike sales look like they’re slowing so there are probably some hellaciously good deals.
No harm in going down and just checking one out… 🙂

The hardest ride I did this year was 8 miles on the fat bike in the middle of the biggest storm of the winter. It took me 1 hour and 53 minutes and I was more beat up than after a century ride. There was so much friction from the snow that I only got out of my 26 tooth inner chainring on the downhills. I was pedaling hard down 7%-8% downgrades to maintain a blistering 9 mph rate of descent. A very different winter workout than doing an hour on the rollers in your basement.

        I’ll never say never, brother…

    Break out the skis!

  5. You need a fat bike with studs. My guess is that your wife will not thank me for putting that thought in your head (insert evil laugh here).

Mwah-ha…. Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaa… Don’t hold your breath, I quite like staying warm indoors on the trainer. Just have to chill on the food a bit. 😉

Oh, eww. Pretty… but eww. 🤤
