Ah, yes. This evening I’ll be up in the fresh air of the north, looking at a perfect weekend for road cycling and an immense expanse of quiet, lightly traveled roads on which to do that. We’ll be seeing some of the most scenic roadways the western side of the northern lower peninsula of Michigan has to offer. Just two of my best friends and me and the open road… and a few diners, a café or two, and at least one dinner at Hofbrau.

Friends, if I created a gallery of every photo I’ve posted on this blog taken on a road trip with my wife and friends, it’d be hundreds of photos long. Now, before we get all hoity-toity about taking an ultra-expensive, privileged road trip with my friends that most normal people couldn’t afford, out the door this trip is going to run me less than $300. Including food. It pays to have a fantastic pop-up camper, folks. They don’t have to be expensive trips to be epic.

You get the idea.

So here’s the “How To”:

  1. Buy a bike.
  2. Ride bike.
  3. Join a Club.
  4. Make friends in that Club.
  5. Ride with friends.
  6. Go on a road trip with friends.

It’s not exactly rocket science and I left all of the little details out (like buying a camper and buying tools, clothing, and all of that stuff), the important part is riding with friends – and if you can take a few days off from a normally busy life to do nothing but ride and hang out with those friends (and if you’re lucky, your spouse) with no other worries but to eat, ride and be merry, well it certainly doesn’t get any better for me.

It’s one of the fantastic pieces of fun that makes work and recovery worth doing. Ride hard my friends.

Have a great trip. Forgive the ignorance, but is a pop-up camper one of those trailers that grows into a sort of tent on the trailer base?

    Soooooo jealous, have great rides!

Amazing! Sounds like a blast. Enjoy every pedal. We leave for Yellowstone in less than a month. My step-daughter chose there to marry. I am so excited it is kind of ridiculous.
I hope that $300 dollar trip is one of the best in the books! A sober brings so much joy!
