An Awesome, Summerlike Weekend On The Tandem

Jess and I were pressed for time Saturday, so we had to keep it relatively tame at just 24 miles, but with summer a full month away, we’ve got some fantastic weather in store for the next few days. We’ll have our normal springtime rain, so riding might be a little sparse, but we were going to make hay while the sun was shining.

So to speak.

It was a little foggy when we left from a hard rain Friday evening and night. The ride was fantastic, around 24-miles at 18-mph… though it did require a thorough de-worming of the bike. That I failed to do because I got busy with yardwork.

Which meant I rolled the tandem out covered in dead worms along the down tube for Sunday Funday. Enough I wondered if the aerodynamics of the bike would be messed up. Not really.

With a mild breeze and sunny skies, we opted for the Sod Farm Loop that rolls by Van Agen’s sod farm (they make a locally famous bird seed from sunflowers they grow). It’s a 40-miler and we had a fantastic group. We started with all of the headwind up front, though you could hardly call it “wind”. We had near an 18-mph average when we hit tailwind for the first time.

It got hot in a hurry after that. The temp was headed north of the mid-80s in a hurry. It would get up to almost 90 by the afternoon (30-ish C). With the tailwind, it was tough to get a breeze unless you were up front. Our average climbed for a bit, then we dialed it back to keep it “Sunday Funday”.

We pulled into the driveway with 41-miles and smiles on our faces… with an 18.6-mph average. It was a glorious ride.

I’m so thankful to be back into the swing of things again.
