My wife and I were out of town.  Not knowing the local roads well, we had no clue where to ride our road bikes…  Which road roads were safe, which to avoid?

Locals have all of the goods when it comes to good routes.  When it comes to my hometown, I know I do.

We called the local bike shop to ask where we could find a local ride.  Turned out the local bike shop was closed but we did contact the previous owner because he had his cell phone listed on his web page.  He put us in contact with the local bike club…  And we rode.

And rode…

We had a wonderful time, rode at a fantastic pace (we met with the B group, closer to our C or even D), climbed a bunch of hills and got our exercise in.

I have been beating the “contact your local bike shop” drum for years, for anyone who truly wants to delve into cycling.  Local bike shops and clubs are a tremendous resource to enjoyed… Contacting a local club or shop takes all of the guesswork out of who to ride with and where to ride.  Everybody wins when we use that resource.  The club gets to meet, ride and share stories with new people and new people get to enjoy the best, safest roads in the area.

    Pretty roads…

Good advice for anyone traveling. Thanks for that Jim. Looks like a beautiful ride.

    Love this! Love this!

I always annoy people who say that “well, I can’t stick to my healthy food plan or exercise because I’m going on vacation….going to the cottage….having guests at my house (you choose…there are a million more excuses) and I reply why not? Circumstances may change but YOU don’t. It’s just as easy to reach for an orange as it is a donut. It’s just as easy to walk/run/bike outside when you’re on vacation as it is at home. If you want to take a break from your wellness, then go ahead. Who am I to stop you? But don’t tell me the reason is anything but you just don’t feel like doing it.

Pictures are great, by the way.

First, thank you. Second, it’s way easier to reach for a donut. Dude, it’s deep fried dough with a sugar coating. Of course, I know I’ll regret said donut on the way up a big ass hill so I choose to not reach for the donut… which is hard. Real, frickin’ hard. It’s a donut.

      Chuckle.

Whoops, hit send before I wanted to. I would support anyone’s decision to reach for the deep friend goodness, I just don’t want them telling me it was because they HAD to because it was vacation and there was nothing else to choose from. Just tell the truth. It’s because they wanted it. After two decades of interesting excuses, I always prefer the truth. Own the donut! 😉

LOL! That would make an excellent cycling tee shirt. Own the Donut. Priceless.

I think highly of your perspective.

  4. Excellent.. and beautiful pictures. That looks like a place that I could get used to riding. Riding there might actually cause me to get the road bug again!

I like that even on vacation you go out for a ride. I had no idea you could call the local bike shop for info, but I guess that would totally make sense. Glad you were able to explore and keep your routine up. Running is easy on vacation even swimming if you’ve got a pool, but biking requires research 🙂
